The Florida political elite let out a collective chuckle when they learned that Florida State GOP boss Jim Greer is eyeing a bid for Congress against incumbent Democrat Suzanne Kosmas.

Greer was telling intimates two weeks ago that he was moving to a “high level” job at the Republican National Committee under Chairman Michael Steele. All of this indicates that Greer thinks his boss Governor Crist is going to run for the U.S. Senate and will no longer be able to protect his henchmen at the helm of Florida’s Republican Party.

Greer wants your money.

Greer wants to spend your money too.

Greer’s musings about running for Congress come on the heels of the Republican Party of Florida’s most recent filings with the Secretary of State that show that the Chairman’s profligate ways have not changed as the Governor told many angry donors it would.

Greer continues to spend like a potentate, cutting low level staff positions while dropping $8,000 at super luxury hotel The London in New York City, a five-star hotel brought to us by London celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey. Greer likes the presidential suite, which goes for $1,800 a night.

More outrageous are the $277,787 in unitemized American Express bills and over $5,000 for American Express finance charges. Claims by RPOF officials that these bills are itemized in state filings under “Other Expenditures” are not totally accurate. Some American Express charges are disclosed while others are not in an effort by the Chairman to continue to hide his opulent lifestyle at GOP expense.

Jim Greer insists on taking private jets and aircraft when much less expensive commercial flights are convenient and affordable. Total costs for luxury charter aircraft was $135,890, but who flew where and how much it cost are carefully buried.

The Chairman is a big fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars (I admittedly am too), for which he charged the Republican Party $650. When Chairman Greer travels he insists on only the best: the Biltmore in Miami, the Four Seasons in Palm Beach, and the Grand Bohemian in Orlando. No Holiday Inns or Motel 6’s for our boy Greer.

Jim Greer and his entourage have left their mark on hors d’oeuvre trays across Florida. His sycophants praise his “strong leadership” while failing to recognize Florida’s loss of two Republican members of Congress and the narrow loss of Florida by John McCain whose campaign in the Sunshine State was submarined by Greer after Charlie Crist was not selected for vice president. Greer’s federal account had a $1.8 million surplus after McCain lost by 2 percent.

A Greer congressional campaign promises to provide comedy gold. Some of Greer’s exploits on the county commission are sure to resurface and guarantee a lively campaign. Local Republican activists are salivating over a Greer candidacy and can’t wait to pull out the knives.
