The race for Republican Sen. Mel Martinez’s vacating Senate seat remains murky.
Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio is considering a run for the seat and would have an advantage in the general election hailing from an all-important bellwether region.
Two candidates who were expected to enter the race both announced they will not be running: Florida Republican Attorney General Bill McCollum and U.S. Rep. Allen Boyd (D-FL) signaled their intentions to run for re-election to their respective posts.
Boyd, a Blue Dog Democrat, was one of only 10 Democrats to vote against the Obama stimulus bill in the House, where it passed 244-188.
As of now, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek and state Sen. Dan Gelber are the only two Democrats to officially enter the race. U.S. Rep. Ron Klein is still mulling a bid.
No names have entered the Republican primary yet, but the Politico writes that former state House Speaker Marco Rubio and U.S. Rep. Connie Mack are preparing campaigns.

You know anything about the possibility of Governor Crist getting in on the action?
Rumors of Crist running for Senate are building… The Politico had a story recently suggesting as much. I don’t think he’ll run, but it’s I guess a possibility. If he did, he’d most probably win.
