A Republican strategist quoted by The Daily Beast thinks a Franken victory is good for the health of the GOP.

“Al Franken is a very tempting target because he is so outrageous,” said Republican strategist Brad Blakeman. “It’s similar to Joe Biden—we hope that Al Franken is the gift that keeps on giving.”

This may be true. In politics, jokes are risky and are the best way to stumble into a gaffe. Being that Franken is a comedian and sketch writer, gaffes will be unavoidable. However, we could be entering an era in which voters recognize the difference between real people, and career politicians and can forgive the occasional misspeak.

It will be interesting to see how much freedom Franken takes with the press and if he does become a “big fat target” for the GOP.
