If Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano does in fact move into Obama’s administration as the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, she will leave a Republican in charge of Arizona.
Arizona is one of a handful of states that does not have a Lt. Governor. Instead, the Secretary of State is the one to replace the Governor upon resignation. In this case, Jan Brewer - a Republican - will replace Governor Janet Napolitano. Brewer herself was considered a candidate for the Governor’s Mansion in 2010 but may get her chance earlier than expected.
The Washington Independent reported last week that Arizona Democrats are concerned that, if Napolitano joins Obama’s cabinet, the new Republican governor will work with the GOP-controlled state Legislature to dramatically cut spending.
Michael Cady has more details on the Napolitano selection.
