Anyone watching Sen. Hilary Clinton’s West Virginia victory speech will notice a sole black man directly behind her. Anyone paying closer attention will also notice that that man has spent the majority of Clinton’s speech looking down at his cellphone to text - a conversation clearly more important than the current one between Clinton and the voters of WV.

Considering that a minuscule 4% of all Democratic primary voters are African American, it can be presumed that the Clinton camp has gone through great lengths to employ tokenism in her background crowd.

While not doubting this man’s appreciation for Clinton’s message (he was seen in a yellow “Hillary for America” T-shirt and genuinely excited to take a picture of the candidate while on stage) it should be noted that the Obama campaign was criticized for a similar case of perceived tokenism.
